The high pressure continued and the snowpack rotted. A small disturbance midweek had dropped down a few inches of light snow, but it was going to be difficult to find any good snow. With that in mind, I decided to go to Gobblers again: I wasn't expecting to find anything, but the view would at least be nice.
I started from Mill Creek, as usual, ascending via Porter Fork. It took 3hr 20mins to get to the summit. From there, I could see a fairly grim Kessler.
There were some clouds keeping the temps from getting too high. The valley was predictably still full of smog.
Bare-looking S facing slopes to the North.
From the summit, I skied down the ridge and headed into Alexander Basin. The skiing in there was ok as the windcrusts had broken down. However, the heli had been there earlier in the week and tracked most of it out.
Skiing directly off the Gobblers summit was not an option!
I skinned back up Alexander Basin to the W summit of Gobblers. The top 400' of the main NW face was still very windblown, but between 9800 and 8800 the skiing was good.
I went back up for another lap taking a line further to the left.
A bit of a bushwhack at the bottom, but nothing compared to the delights of Pole Canyon a few weeks ago.
All in all, quite a nice day to be in the mountains with the snow on the Gobblers NW face being far better than expected.
