On Monday with the cold temperatures still hanging around we decided to cheat - taking the tram at Snowbird in order to access Miller Hill from the bottom of Mineral Basin. Our objective was to ski some low elevation Aspens on the NE flank, hoping that we would find some non wind-hammered snow. Pagan Ridge was just a little bit windy, so we stopped just short of the summit. It may have been blowing a gale, but we did at least have a nice view of Timp from the ridge.
Predictably the first 600' below the ridge were a hideous mix of bulletproof Sastrugi and breakable crusts, making our adventure on Gobblers the day before seem not so bad. Below 9,500' in the Aspens we did find some good snow. It was all very low angle, but about 500' above the canyon bottom, there is a fairly significant rollover which made for some good turns.
Whilst skinning back up through the junk was a bit of an effort, at these lower elevations the snow and the weather were quite cooperative so we spent a nice day lapping the Aspens. Leaving it a bit late, there was a final 'sprint' from the Canyon bottom to catch the 3:30 lift at Mineral Basin in order to get home. 5,400' on the day, and the Wasatch is in dire need of some new snow.
