On Sunday, with the bluebird conditions continuing, we went back to Port Valdez to ascend Comstock, the peak East of Sugarloaf. As shown below, Comstock is part of the Mt Francis massif and we were looking to ski a couple of couloirs from the upper cirque marked C1 and C2.
Ascent was from sea level with a bushwhack through the rain forest at the bottom.
On the way up, there was a substantial amount of debris from an earlier slide.
We climbed the couloir on the left first. We were a little concerned that this appeared to be the only place in the cirque in which we couldn't make out the crown from the old slide.
It was getting quite slabby towards the top so we turned around and skied the lower portion.
The right couloir was looking quite good though it had seen some sun during the morning.
I booted up and skied down a rather nice sun crust.
There was some nice powder in the apron.
We continued to ski down with the Port Valdez and the mountains in the background.
